Dr Dan Baumgardt
Dr Dan Baumgardt I’m a Senior Lecturer in Neuroscience at the University of Bristol and a practicing rural GP based in Southwest England. My work explores how nutrition, flavour, and the brain shape health, wellbeing, and everyday lifestyle choices. I’m particularly interested in how flavour, memory, and mood influence what we eat — and how a better understanding of food psychology and neuroscience can help us live more healthily, and cook more thoughtfully. Alongside my academic and clinical work, I’m a health and science writer and enthusiastic amateur cook. I combine evidence-based health communication with practical kitchen experience. I’m passionate about food that deepens our understanding of flavour, eating, and ourselves. My main culinary passions are the baking traditions of the South West where I grew up, as well as the food of Mitteleuropa and the Mediterranean, particularly Venetian and Israeli cuisine.
